Working from is a dream that many office workers have. After all, who wants to deal with the stress of a daily commute? Many companies realize this, and so offer telecommuting as an option for their employees.  If you want to work from home, then it’s time to propose this to your boss. But where do you start? And can you handle the common challenges of working from home?

The first thing to remember when proposing telecommuting is the benefits to your boss. Will it save them money on office and parking space? It’s things like this that you should include in your proposal. You can talk about how it will benefit you, but these benefits should only number one or two and be secondary.

You might have to attend meetings online or answer phone calls when working from home. So think about what kinds of computer programs you might need in order to accomplish this. If you will have to be online during your work hours, ask whether the company would consider covering that portion of your internet service providers by zip code bill.

You can minimize your boss’s risk in letting you telecommute by proposing a trial period. You can include a term that allows your boss to call you back into the office if things don’t work out with you working at home.

Working at home can result in different challenges, one of the most common being the fact that you might be distracted by family members who don’t know how to handle your work-at-home schedule. But these can be prevented.

One way to lessen interruptions at home is to use a spare bedroom as an office. This will allow for office space with a door. You can keep the door closed during your working hours, and post your hours and break times so that family members know when it’s appropriate to knock or come into your office to speak with you.

Getting a head start on your day can prevent any negative or jealous comments from coworkers about you not pulling your weight. Instead of getting up at the time you’d start work at the office, try arising at the time you normally would and using you and your coworkers’ commute time to return phone calls or email clients. That way, coworkers will know you’ve been working when they arrive at the office.

You need to take breaks during your work day. But at home, you can be tempted to take longer breaks than you normally might. To avoid this, write down your break times and adhere to them. This will ensure you devote the same amount of time to your work at home as you would be if you were at the office.
