Deep in the heart of the northern Brazilian Amazon rainforest, on the banks of the mighty Amazon River, is the city of Manaus. Manaus is the Amazons largest city and has a bustling cosmopolitan center of over 1.8 million people. Growing at a rapid pace, Manaus is filled with modern buildings rising above the traditional roofs as its economy expands with eco-tourism. The city has become the gateway port to entering the Amazon and the city offers all kinds of activities for nature lovers. From trekking in the forest, to canoeing in the lake or just simply bird watching. There are some wonderful natural pools which are superb for swimming because locals advise against swimming in the lakes. The main attractions for visitors are concentrated in the town-square and are easily accessible on foot. The Cathedral is located in the center and is built on a Jesuit style hillock. The Teatro Amazonas was completed in 1896 and is the venue for some of the greatest theater performers. Manaus has an impressive array of museums such as the Instituto Geografico e Historico de Amazonas, Museo do Indio and the Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazonia. The Manaus excursions will depend on each traveler’s travel guide but all excursions will follow the confluence of the yellow-brown Amazon and the blue-black Rio Negro, which is commonly known as the meeting of the waters. Other main attractions include the small town of Presidente Figueiredo, Arquipelago de Anavilhanas, and the Mamiraua. The monkey rehabilitation center has also grown to become a main tourist attraction. Neighboring the city is the National Park of Jaú, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest national parks in Latin America, covering 5,614,234 acres. Also nearby are several native tribes, beautiful waterfalls, and the impressive Meeting of the Waters, the confluence of the Rio Negro, the Rio Solimos, and the Rio Amazonas.Manaus has some genuinely rewarding sights, including a leafy zoo with as many animals out of the cages as in them, and a beach-and-museum combo that gets you out of the city center.
